Here's some handy advice for when you move in to your new home:

Sign-up appointment

Your Lettings and New Tenancy Officer will go through your Tenancy Agreement with you. This will be a Scottish Secure Tenancy (SST) or Short Scottish Secure Tenancy (SSST) which is a legal contract between you and Places for People Scotland. It sets out the conditions of your tenancy, your rights and responsibilities as a tenant and our rights and responsibilities as a landlord. You will get your keys at this appointment and can move in. We’ll go through other details including:

Settling in meeting

We will make contact with you after you have moved in.

This is to:

  • Ensure contact details are shared
  • Check you're clear on how to report repairs, work your heating and know about rubbish collections
  • Discuss if you're having any problems with rent, housing benefit or neighbours
  • Offer advice and/or refer you for a financial health check
  • Tell you how you can get involved in your neighbourhood

Collecting your keys

We'll arrange a time and a date for you to collect your keys. You'll meet the lettings officer who will explain your tenancy and answer any questions - including how to claim housing benefit.

Financial help

If you are worried about the cost of moving home, our New Tenancy Support service can help with grants and applications as well as other support to help you settle into your new home.

Your property should be in a good state of repair when you move in. We'll tell you if there are any outstanding repairs to be completed when you sign-up. If you find any problems report a repair.

Tell people you've moved

  • Friends and family

  • Electricity and gas supplier

  • Council tax department

  • Bank

  • Department of Work and Pensions (DWP)

Gas, electricity and phone lines

You'll find that the power to your new home has been cut-off for safety reasons. If you don't know your supplier contact the meter point reference service on 0870 608 1524. Make sure you've got the meter serial number written down when you call.

Contact us on 01772 667075 (calls from a mobile are charged at your usual tariff so will be free if you have free minutes and are within your allowance) once you've been connected. We'll arrange for a contractor to visit and check everything is working well. We'll also give you advice on how to operate your heating appliances and issue a safety record.

We will tell you at your sign up appointment who your gas and electricity suppliers are, please take meter readings as soon as you get your keys and contact your supplier to set up an account. You don’t need to ask us if you want to put in a phone line – just go ahead and arrange it. You do need our permission to install a satellite dish.
